How many times have you noticed that your head wants to do one thing and
your body may want or need to do something else? Our culture is so body phobic
that we are encouraged to not listen to our bodies. Most of us are so
used to demands of work or family or other commitments that we don't
even pay attention when our body needs something else. For example how
often have you given up rest because of demands at work? It's amazing
that this can also show up around trying to control regular body
functions. How many times have we held off on something as simple as
going to the bathroom because we didn't have time for it?
Eventually we get so used to ignoring our body that we aren't even
conscious of our body's needs. We don't even pay attention to what our
body is trying to tell us. We ignore the signals. Our body can put up
with a lot, but eventually will keep saying what it needs louder and
louder until, at some point, it can't be ignored any longer.
At this point the body takes over. This may come across as extreme
fatigue or even illness. But eventually the body will be heard. Wouldn't
it make more sense to listen to the subtle messages from the body and
take care of our needs sooner rather than later? How much pain and
illness could be avoided if we only listened?
This also can come across in the opposite way. Our head may want
something and our body just isn't ready for it. I see this most often
around sex. Most guys think that we're supposed to be ready and willing
for sex at any time. Most of us may have felt that way during our
younger years and we become concerned when we no longer are ready at any
time. Consequently, we don't listen to our body and furtively engage in
sexual activity when our body isn't ready. The result is usually a less
than satisfying experience.
Our bodies are in natural cycles and sexual energy is no different. When
your body is ready for sexual activity engage it fully. When your body
isn't ready, listen to your body and let go of the noise in your head to
try to overrule the body.
I've found that meditation is a great way to tune into what your body
needs. Spend a few moments relaxing and breathing and see what messages
your body has for you. Try not to judge the messages. There's no such
thing as a right or wrong message from your body. All messages are true.
Just listen and see what your body is trying to tell you. Of course, another great way to check in with your body is through massage. Massage is a great way to set aside the noise of the moment and listen. You may be surprised at what your body has to tell you! Summer is upon us - even in chilly San Francisco! Get out and enjoy what the season has to offer. Ed
