Masculine Energy as a Pathway to Intimacy
A New Workshop! How many assumptions do we make as men? What lessons did we learn as boys that still impact us today? Do we notice that our assumptions and concerns about how man are supposed to act get is our way? Many guys equate vulnerability with weakness. We learned if we show our true feelings that others may see this as weakness. Most of us learned this lesson when we were much younger and still carry this lesson with us. I know that I've personally struggled with many of these issues. My father taught me many valuable lessons; however, one of the lessons was also that 'boys don't cry.' I learned that we're supposed to hide our feelings from others and from ourselves. Somehow I also learned that showing feelings is admitting weakness. So I went through much of my life hiding from myself. I learned that being perceived as different invites ridicule and hurt. As a queer boy growing up I learned that there are rules of behavior. Deviating from these rules again invites ridicule and hurt. I vividly remember getting beat on because of how I was perceived. At the time, I remember just learning to conform and hide. It wasn't until later that I was able to put all this in a wider perspective and come out from under a shell I made for myself. So we all carry versions of these lessons. This workshop will combine discussion and experiences brought from many diverse traditions to offer you an opportunity to feel your true self and be authentic with a group of men. The workshop will be an opportunity to relearn some of the lessons that no longer serve us. This clothes on workshop promises to embody true masculine authenticity. I will be co-leading this workshop with Simon Geoghegan. Simon is a Leadership Coach who works with leaders around the world in many organizations. He lives outside Toronto with his wife and 3 boys. Simon and I believe that these issues transcend sexual orientation. In fact, we were amazed that we share so many common beliefs about the male experience other than sexual orientation. Please contact me if you have any questions or would like more information. You can also see the website for more about this workshop. The workshop will be held at The Center for Sex and Culture, 1519 Mission Street Suite #1 (between 11th Street and South Van Ness) in San Francisco.
